How to Download TikTok Videos on Windows and Mac Computer

On a laptop or desktop, the whole job happens inside Chrome, Edge, Safari or Firefox. Open TikTok in the browser (or on your phone, since either works), find the post, copy its link, and paste it into a downloader such as ssstiktok.media. No account, no software install, no browser extension required for a single video.

1. Open the TikTok post you want, either in the app on your phone or in a browser tab.
2. Tap the Share icon and choose Copy link, or copy the address bar URL if you are already browsing on the computer.
3. Go to the downloader site in a new tab and paste the link into the input box.
4. Choose a quality option if more than one is offered, then start the save.
5. Wait for your browser's own download to finish; it behaves like any other file save.

Each browser has its own default folder, and it catches people out more than anything else in this process.

• Chrome and Edge on Windows: files go to C:\Users\[you]\Downloads unless you changed it.
• Safari on Mac: files go to ~/Downloads, visible as “Downloads” in Finder's sidebar.
• Firefox: same Downloads folder on both systems by default, with its own download panel accessible from the toolbar arrow icon.

To change the default folder: in Chrome or Edge, go to Settings → Downloads and toggle “ask where to save each file” or set a new location. In Safari on Mac, go to Settings → General and change the “File download location” dropdown.

If a downloader shows you a direct play button or video preview rather than an automatic save, right-click it and choose Save link as (Chrome, Edge, Firefox) or Download Linked File As (Safari). This lets you pick both the folder and the file name before anything downloads, which is worth doing since most saved TikTok files land with a long string of numbers as their name.

A simple habit that pays off: rename immediately using the creator's username and a short description, like username_recipe-video.mp4. Doing it the moment the file lands is far easier than trying to identify forty numbered files later.

For occasional single-video downloads, no. A browser-based tool does the same job without asking for install permissions, background access, or update prompts. Desktop apps and extensions that promise TikTok downloading often bundle extra toolbars, request broad browser permissions, or get abandoned and stop working after a TikTok update.

If you are downloading dozens of videos regularly for a work project, a dedicated tool can save time, but vet it carefully first: check who publishes it, when it was last updated, and whether it asks for more access than a video download reasonably needs.

Not every site calling itself a “TikTok downloader” is trustworthy. Watch for these warning signs:

• Nothing happens after pasting: double-check the link was copied from the post itself, not the profile page.
• Download starts then fails: try a different browser; some ad blockers or strict privacy extensions interrupt downloads.
• File plays with no sound: some system media players need a codec update; try VLC, which plays nearly everything.
