Where Downloaded Videos Go on Android, iPhone, Windows and Mac

Most Android browsers place saved media in an internal Download folder. Open the Files or My Files app, choose internal storage, then Download, and sort by date so the newest item sits at the top.

• Videos may not appear in Gallery immediately. Reopening Gallery, or moving the file into Movies or DCIM, usually makes it show up.
• Some phones keep browser downloads in a separate app folder. The browser's download list is the reliable way to see the real path.
• If a download was blocked, check whether the browser has permission to save files and whether storage is nearly full.

Safari and most other iOS browsers save into the Files app rather than Photos. Open Files, tap Browse, choose On My iPhone or iCloud Drive, then open Downloads.

To bring the file into your gallery, tap it, use the Share button and choose Save Video or Save Image. Only then does it appear in Photos, in your camera roll and in albums. Videos saved this way sit alongside your own recordings and are included in normal backups.

Chrome, Edge and Firefox all default to the Downloads folder in your user profile. Open File Explorer, click Downloads in the sidebar, and sort by date modified.

• Press the browser's downloads shortcut to see the list of recent files, then choose “Show in folder”.
• If a video will not play, try a different player rather than assuming the file is broken.
• Set the browser to ask where to save each file if you would rather sort downloads as they arrive.

Look in the Downloads folder in Finder, which also sits in the Dock by default. Sorting by Date Added brings the newest file to the top immediately.

Saved videos do not enter the Photos app automatically. Drag the file into Photos if you want it stored and backed up with the rest of your library, or keep it in a normal folder if you plan to edit it.

• Create one folder for saved media and move new files there the same day. A weekly clean-up takes two minutes and prevents a thousand-item Downloads folder.
• Rename each file with something meaningful. Dates plus a short description work well and sort neatly.
• Keep anything you would hate to lose in two places: the device and a backup or cloud folder. Phones get lost and replaced.
• Delete duplicates and half-finished downloads. Broken files quietly take up space and confuse you later.

Being able to store a file does not make it yours to publish. Keep saved media for personal viewing unless the creator agreed otherwise, and be careful with shared computers where other people can browse your Downloads folder.
