Common TikTok Download Errors and How to Fix Them Fast

Most download problems come from one of about ten causes. Once you know which one you are looking at, the fix usually takes under a minute.

Why downloads fail in the first place

A TikTok download tool has to do three things correctly: read the link you gave it, ask TikTok's servers for that specific post, and hand you back a file your device can save. Each of those steps can break on its own, which is why the errors below look so different from one another even though they all end the same way, an empty download.

Ten errors, and the fastest fix

Invalid or unsupported link

Cause: you pasted a search page, a hashtag page, or a link with extra tracking text glued onto the end. Fix: open the post itself, tap share, and copy the link fresh rather than copying from the address bar.

Short vt.tiktok.com link not resolving

Cause: shortened links sometimes expire or route through a redirect that times out. Fix: open the short link in a browser once so it resolves to the full tiktok.com address, then copy that instead.

“Failed to fetch” or no data returned

Cause: usually a shaky internet connection or a temporary hiccup on TikTok's side. Fix: wait ten seconds and try again; switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data or back if it repeats.

Stuck at “fetching”

Cause: the request is taking longer than expected, often on a slow or congested connection. Fix: give it 15-20 seconds; if nothing happens, refresh the page and paste the link again rather than waiting indefinitely.

Private or removed post

Cause: the account is private, or the video was deleted or taken down. Fix: there is no workaround here, and there shouldn't be. Only public posts can be fetched, which is by design.

Region-blocked post

Cause: the creator or TikTok restricted the video to certain countries. Fix: this is a genuine limitation set by the platform or the uploader, and respecting it is the right call rather than something to route around.

Zero-byte or corrupted file

Cause: the connection dropped mid-download, often on unstable Wi-Fi. Fix: delete the broken file and download again on a steadier connection.

Download blocked by the browser

Cause: a pop-up or download blocker treated the file as a pop-up. Fix: check the address bar for a blocked-download icon and allow it, or try a different browser if it keeps happening.

Slow or interrupted download on mobile data

Cause: a weak signal or a carrier that throttles video traffic. Fix: switch to Wi-Fi if you can, or choose the normal quality file instead of HD to reduce the size.

File saved but not visible in the gallery

MP3 missing for a post

Cause: not every post has an extractable audio track, especially ones using licensed music that TikTok restricts. Fix: try again on a different post using the same sound, since original sounds usually export more reliably. Our MP3 download guide covers this in more detail.

Honest limitation: if a post is private, deleted or region-locked, no downloader, including ours, can retrieve it. That is not a bug to report, it is the platform working as intended.

A six-step checklist before you try anything else

  1. Confirm the post is public by opening it in a private/incognito browser tab.
  2. Copy the link again fresh from the share menu, not from your browser history.
  3. Check your connection by loading any other website.
  4. Reload the downloader page and paste the link into a blank field.
  5. Try the other quality option (HD or normal) in case one version is misbehaving.
  6. Restart the browser or app if the same link fails twice in a row.

When to contact support

If you have worked through the checklist and a link that is clearly public still will not fetch after a few minutes, that is worth reporting.
