How to Download Instagram Stories in 2026

Stories vanish after 24 hours, which is exactly why people want to keep them — a friend's birthday post, a recipe, a shop's discount code, or your own trip photos. A cousin asked me last week why her saved story had no music, and that question turned into this guide. Here is what works for your own stories, what works for public ones, and what nobody can honestly promise.

First, which kind of story is it?

"Download Instagram story" means very different things depending on whose story it is. Getting this straight saves a lot of wasted time.

  • Your own story. Instagram gives you proper tools: save now, or recover it later from Archive.
  • A public account's story or Highlight. Visible to anyone, so it can be watched and, for personal use, often saved through a link.
  • Close Friends or a private account. Only approved people see it. No outside website can reach it, whatever the advert says.

Saving your own story, step by step

Open your live story

Tap your profile picture on the home screen while the story is still up. You will see each part of the story in order.

Tap More, then Save

Tap the three dots at the bottom right. Choose Save, and then either the single photo or video, or the whole story as one video.

Check your gallery

The file goes straight to Photos on iPhone or the Instagram folder in your Android gallery. Play it once to confirm the sound is there.

Turn on auto archive

In Settings, open Archiving and downloading and turn on Save story to archive. From now on every story is kept privately, forever.

The missing music problem. When your story uses a song from Instagram's music library, saving it to your phone can strip the audio because of licensing. The copy in your Archive still plays with music inside the app, and the full account data download usually keeps it too.

Getting back stories you posted months ago

Most people do not realise Instagram has quietly kept every story they ever posted, as long as archiving was on (it is on by default for most accounts). Go to your profile, tap the menu, choose Archive and switch the top selector to Stories archive. They are grouped by date.

Open any old story, tap More and choose Save video. If you want everything at once — for example before changing phones — use Your activity, then Download your information, and request a copy of your media. Instagram emails a link when the file is ready. It can take a few hours, but you get original files rather than screen recordings.

Public stories and Highlights

Highlights are stories a creator chose to pin to their profile, so they stay public long after 24 hours. Brands, restaurants and teachers use them for menus, price lists and tutorials, which is often exactly what people want to keep.

For personal use, the cleanest route is simply to ask. Many small businesses will happily send you the menu or price list as a file. If you prefer to save it yourself, open the Highlight on the web, copy the link and use a trusted browser downloader, the same way you would with a Reel. On iPhone the file lands in Files, Downloads; tap it, then Save Video to move it into Photos. On Android it normally appears in the gallery on its own.

Anonymous story viewer sites: read this first

Search for an Instagram story downloader and the first page is full of sites promising to let you watch anyone's story anonymously, including private ones. When we tried a handful, the pattern was the same: fake download buttons, requests to allow notifications, and eventually a form asking for your Instagram username and password "to continue".

Do not type your login anywhere except Instagram itself. A genuine tool only ever needs a public link. If you already entered your password on one of these pages, change it now, turn on two-factor authentication, and check Accounts Centre for devices you do not recognise.

Does Instagram tell someone if I download their story?
Instagram does not send a notification when a story is saved through a link or screenshotted in normal stories. But your name still appears in the viewer list if you watched it while logged in. Assume the person can see that you viewed it.
Can I download stories from a private account?
No, and you should be wary of any site that says it can. Private stories are only visible to approved followers inside the app. Tools that promise otherwise usually want your password or are simply fake.
How do I save my own story with the music?
Saving from the story screen sometimes drops licensed music. The most reliable way is to keep Save story to archive turned on, then download it from your Archive, or use the account data download, which keeps the original files.
Where are old stories I posted?
Open your profile, tap the menu, then Archive, and switch to Stories archive. Every story you posted is there if archiving was turned on, even years later. From there you can save it, share it again or add it to a Highlight.

Be kind with other people's stories
